Carmakers will most likely meet the stricter fuel economy policies by producing smaller engines that give you enough power. Fiat now has a turbocharged twin power plant that gives out 900 cc for the minicar Fiat 500 being marketed in Europe. This engine will not be installed to the 2011 Fiat 500 that will roll out on U.S. shores.

Fiat has not released the official numbers but they are saying that the small engine of the Fiat 500 will be spewing out less than 100 g of CO2 every kilometer.

Fiat offered a similar small twin engine back in 1996 in one of the Cinqucento releases. Today, only Tata through its Nano use a 33 horsepower 623cc power plant being sold in India.

In Europe, there are several car models that are equipped with 3-cylinder engines. The smallest of which is a diesel engine of the Smart ForTwo with 800 cc that can output 45 horsepower. Other car makers using a similar engine are Subaru, Suzuki, Opel, Mitsubishi, Chevrolet, and several others.
